this weekend was a whirlwind of activities.
from running to meetings to parties to church, it was non-stop from the moment i got off work on friday.
i met a good friend, scott down at the beach after work for a run, and then zoomed back home to get cleaned up. friday night evaporated as i headed over to wade's house to help with his wireless network. up early saturday to run one last easy run with brian, then down to the race expo to pick up our kits and then off to church. sunday came at 4am and we were on our way to the race by 5am.
we ended up with plenty of time before the race (i get antsy and HATE showing up with little time to mentally prep and warm up). brian was really anxious and his stomach was doing loops. i talked him down a bit and we did some light jogging to warm up. he felt much better after that. the race started at 7:30, and it was pretty cool out (in the high 50's), but with no marine layer, it looked like it might get hot during the race. the sun came out and started to warm things up a bit.
brian's longest run had been 12 miles and he'd done that in 2:28, so he was hoping to run at a 12:20 - 12:30 minute pace. we did the first mile in 11 minutes, simply because we were all excited and it's hard to pace for that first mile with the thousands of other folks running next to you. after the first mile, we stayed really close to a 12 minute pace. brian did VERY well through the whole thing. at 10 miles he started to fade a little bit, but was staying on pace.
before we knew it, we were saying, "less than one mile to go!". the last quarter mile, brian started to pick up the pace and we sprinted the last couple hundred meters. we came in at 2:33:19, which i think averaged out to an 11:44 or something like that. he was very excited with his time. i talked to him last night and he was pretty wiped out, but ready to start training to drop his pace to 11 minutes. what a trooper!
i headed straight from the race over to some friends for a pool party, where i swam, and swam and cannon-balled, and swam. then sunday night, headed over to the murphy's for a church meeting. i'm glad to finally be back at work now so's i can get some rest!
all the time spent in the sun running and swimming has got my face quite the nice shade of red. yeah, it looks burnt, but it's funny how i can spend hours and hours in the sun being active, but not actually get burnt. people look at me and exclaim that it must hurt, but it feels just fine. i guess it helps that i drink tons of water too.
but, for today, i am a lobster.
