weekend re-cap

another friday off and another chance to catch up on some much needed rest. smsmh and i slept in and rolled out of bed around 7:30, over 8 hours of sleep for me!

troy rang around 8:30 and we hooked up at the aliso creek trail to do a short 3 mile run and spend some time talking. it was great to get out and get some exercise with him and get a preview of what the message was going to be on saturday night. i had been toying with the idea of only catching part of it on saturday night and instead going down to the beach to do some photography for a friend of wade's that was going to propose. but listening to troy talk about what he had prepared really reminded me that saturday nights MUST be a priority for me.

i got a call from work friday afternoon and had to do some database stuff for our physical inventory, so my afternoon was spoiled. things brightened up friday night, though, as we went over to lyn and pam's to celebrate kira's birthday. the kurd and jumpingjehosephathead along with my parents showed up too. i got to spend the evening chasing the kids around the house and generally terrorizing them with tickles and slobber.

brian flaked on me (well, he did have some stomach issues) saturday morning, so i headed to the community center on the aliso creek trail to do my run. since i didn't have to run slow, i thought i'd go out pretty fast and push it. ended up doing 6 miles in 43:00 - although, i think i cut about a minute each way out, so i bumped my final time up to 45:00. between 1.5 and the 2.0 marker, i always seem to run about a minute faster than every other half mile. i'm wondering if it's just short, or if there's another route i should be taking. i'll have to cycle it to find out.

i have to toot my horn for a second. smsmh had a halloween job in hollywood that she had to leave at 8am for. i knew she'd be a little stressed about getting out there on time, so i offered to gas the car up for her in the morning. this gave me the opportunity to get up and make her a shake, put water in the car and put 'our' cd in the player. watching her smile brighten with each little token was great. i walked her out to the car, waited for her start it up and watched as she lit up when the 'into the mystic' by van morrisson came on the player. doing little things like that for her, and watching her joyful reaction is one of the greatest thrills about being married to this awesome woman.

saturday night, after church, tim and jeannie came over to hang out (and eat pumpkin pie!). smsmh was still working the job in hollywood, but ended up making it home around 9pm. we watched psycho and other spooky type programs.

up at 7am on sunday (love the extra hour of sleep!) and out to the baseball fields on the aliso creek trail to do a 12 miler with ken. ken brought his bike along, since he only planned on running 8 with me and ended up biking the extra 4. we set a pretty good pace, but not so fast that it wasn't a good recovery run for ken. i think it averaged out to a 9 minute pace, with 10-12 somewhere around 8:30 or so. we spent some time throwing around ideas for a race to run. looks like we're looking at either yakima or ottawa again. as a rule, i've said that i don't want to run the same marathon twice, so i'm leaning toward yakima. that being said, if i was going to re-run any marathon, it'd be ottawa. the course, the crowds, the support, the city, all were absolutely first rate.

ken continues to amaze me. we spend each and every run just laying bare the issues in our lives. i've know this guy just a little over a month, run with him on 3 occasions, and he's opening up and telling me things about his life from the darkest closets. and the cool thing is that i feel just as comfortable sharing with him. i take every thing we talk about and turn it inside out in reflection all week long. these runs with ken really get my physical AND mental gears working.

sunday afternoon ended up a bust too, as i ended up spending most of the time babysitting a procedure running against my database at work and then setting up the system for physical inventory for monday. but, i got to stay home for the first time in 7 years for halloween and hand out candy. i was surprised that we had over 50 kids come by. they cleaned us out!

i think this is the first year where we haven't had loads of sweets left over. good thing, too, i could eat reeses pieces for EVER...
