so much to write about, so little time! so, i'll just hit the highlights with a paragraph apiece.
first off, i ran some new trails last week. i mapped out a decent 16 miler through laguna coast, starting from a new location in the hopes that i'd have a new route to take members of the socal trail headz on. early into the run, though, one of the main trails had about a 2 mile section that was protected land. i continued on through that section, simply because to turn around and skirt it meant adding double digit extra miles. well, on the return back to my car, the fuzz found me. fortunately i was able to talk my way out of it and didn't get fined or arrested. that scratches a great possibility for a loop off of my list of routes, though. this section, though, IS legal and some of the finest single track in so. orange county. sorry about the quality (keep reading, it'll change soon!).
second, we were invited to have dinner over at dmitri place on sunday. we were treated to a fantastic evening with great company (we were outnumbered by the russians present!), a plethora of AMAZING and healthy dishes, loads of stuffed animals and a new table game from switzerland. the meal was phenominal...bean salad, pesto/caper/olive spread, broccoli salad and the main dish, jamacian chicken with sweet potatos accompanied by cantelope and pineapple. dood. yum. thanks dmitri and irina!
thirdly, i was tagged by dmitri with one of those silly internet memes. come up with a six word memoir? okay, how about, "laughs at poop and always smiles".
finally, and this may take more than one paragraph, i was selected as part of a marketing/testing push by a prominent trail shoe company who is partnering with a prominent mobile phone company (the connection will make sense eventually). part of the marketing angle is to have the participants select a challenge based on their fitness level and use the blog to tell stories about the training and the actual event.
well, this presented the perfect opportunity for something i've been wanting to do for quite some time. my challenge is to run mt. whitney. the exact route is still a little up in the air, but i'm thinking of starting at the campground just before the road heads up to the whitney portal, run to the summit and then come down the mountaineer's route. i've been up the main trail once and up the mountaineers route twice, so i'm familiar with the whole loop. i think it'll be BLAST. but, now i'm on the hook for it. that means lots of training runs up and down san jacinto and san gorgonio. weee! stay tuned for an update on the challenge and on the products i'll be using.
I SO hope that ends up on an episode of Cops.
Posted by: Dave at April 10, 2008 08:35 AMAnd you know Dave and I will watch it because we stay in on Saturday nights to do that. And we watch reruns on G4. And on Justice TV.
I must say, I'm jealous that you have such glorious scenery and trails around you. We will have to pay a visit again.
Posted by: Meredith at April 10, 2008 08:51 AMwhat a cool challenge...
Posted by: Angie at April 10, 2008 08:54 AMCool single-track trail! I wanna try it some time too! It was just a bit disappointing your movie did not end up with your encounter with the cops!
Thanks for coming over on Sunday! It is a pity you could not stay longer! You should not have disclosed the spread secret though. Next time we will make you sign a NDA (non-disclosure agreement) before dinner :)))

I am always reading about how other running bloggers are approached for test marketing of products. I'll say it again, I *REALLY* want to know how you all get picked out for these things. This sounds seriously cool. With my love of technology, I am on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what the link to the prominent phone company has in mind. Do tell (when you can)...
Posted by: Juls at April 10, 2008 10:22 AMPS. Stay out of trouble now. I haven't watched the video yet. I am saving it for non-work hours (if you get my hint).
Posted by: Juls at April 10, 2008 10:24 AMAwesome challenge. So, how DO you get picked, anyway? And if your sponsors are looking for somebody to give a perspective on training for Western States, please send them my way.
Have fun!

Posted by: kurd at April 10, 2008 12:51 PMi don't know how i get picked for this stuff. maybe because i use tags on my posts and it makes me show up in searches more? maybe because i run breakingthetape.com? i don't know...but i sure do like it (except when the product really sucks). ;)

Posted by: Amy at April 10, 2008 01:42 PMHi Jeff. Thanks for your post on my blog! I guess we all live and learn and it's great when we can learn from others instead of doing it the hard way.

That dinner sounded yum.
And word up to Amy - I never get picked to test anything!
