in which our hero cleans chocolate cake boogers

saturday was tc's big birthday pool party.  wow, it's really hard to imagine that a year ago i was in the receiving room holding his tiny, tiny hand singing "hey jude" to him under the warming lamp.  talk about the fastest year ever. 

so, thunderclap newman smith is officially one year old.  to celebrate, we threw a big gala at his uncle's place so everyone could enjoy the pool.  we had a great turn out with a bunch of friends and family.  when i showed up with the birthday boy, there were only a handful of folks there, so tc and i jumped into the pool and played around for a while.

as the day wore on, party-goers with kids needed to head out to stick with their own respective child schedules, so we plopped tc into his high chair and began the opening of presents.  it's funny...i received a couple phonecalls prior to the party asking what tc wanted or needed for his birthday.  my stock response was, "well, he's really into tupperware, cardboard and extension cords..."  but when it came to opening gifts, nobody followed my suggestions.  oh well, maybe next year.  the little guy made out with some really cool loot, though.  seriously groovy stuff, like percussion toys, rubbery big lego blocks and books out the wazoo (no, not THAT book).

immediately after the presents, it was time rock the cake.  yes.  THE cake.  he tentatively played with the frosting for a bit until grandma took both of his hands and shoved them down into the cake.  from that point, it was all over.  he tore through the cake and finally figured out that it was edible, at which point, he proceeded to put himself into a sugar coma.

it was a fantastic day of family and friends all gathering to celebrate our little guy's special day.  buon compleanno, mia scimmia piccolissimo!

oh! and i decided to start a "365 days of thunderclap" and take a photo of him every day for the next year. i started on the first day of his second year and have a week under my belt so far. it'll be tricky getting photos of him when i'm in the uk, but i'll figure something out!
