conversation with the newbie..
"uhhh.. AJ. you could probably take the reflectors off your bike now, you've uh.. had it for a while"
"i... the, um. huh?"
"reflectors."
"i have reflectors on my bike?!!!!" (why i was excited about this... i don't know.. because i'm 12?!)
he's standing next to my bike, points at the reflectors
"oh cool!"
"uhh.. yeah no. you don't have to keep those. you can take'em off."
"huh.
well, but i mean.... they came with the bike!! so..."
he glances at my fellow bikers. my fellow have-been-biking-for-years-bikers. they chuckle.
"yeah. you don't need reflectors."
another friend chimes in, quietly laughing...
"or lights, or training wheels.."
"a kick stand..."
i glare, giving him my best mm, yes. you're a riot look.
"okay.. well.... how do i get them off??"
he looks at me. shakes his head..
"whaaaat?!?!!! i don't know... i probably don't have that tool yet??!"
*pause*
"screwdriver AJ... use a screwdriver."
and once again... they laugh.
awesome.
*sigh*
something tells me i've got a lot of learning to do!!!

I like my reflectors, but I can so see wanting to be more "aero". Funny

I totally forgot about my rear reflector until just before the tri last weekend. The front one popped off the second time I rode my bike and freaked the hell out of me as it got caught up in the spokes. But I kept forgetting about the rear one. Thankfully, I remembered it b/f racking my bike b/f the race and took it off. Or else, I would have been that "last guy out of the water" and "the guy that still had reflectors on his bike".

Hey, at least they told you about it instead of just laughing behind your back?

Screw them. Next time you ride, put some of those little dangly things from the handle bars and a bell :-)
Posted by: Wes | September 26, 2006 10:30 PM
yes. tassles! hahaha, yeah! no.
a bell, though, never hurt anyone. they make 'em really small and loud now.
have you made the move to clipless pedals yet?
Posted by: good ol' j | September 27, 2006 03:42 AM
Yeah, because reflectors on your bike would add so darn much weight and would totally mess you up aif you ride in the dark, what with all those car headlights shining on you.

Don't tell me you still have a dork disc too??? :o
Posted by: Flatman | September 27, 2006 07:09 AM
i think you should put playing cards on your spokes because they make a cool noise when you ride...
so what the hell is wrong with reflectors? are they not cool? or do they want you to "run silent, run deep?"
But, hey, you need a screwdriver? Must be some BOY you know who has one!

I never put my reflectors on the the first place. Heres what you need to do: Put tassles on the bars, multi colored spoke nipples, those little balls that go Clack-Clack on the spokes, a big tall orange flag on the rear, and a squeeky horn. Show up for the ride in a bright kid looking sundress and a skid lif with flowers all over it.

reflectors and lights are uncool? So, do they not have cars on the road in Missouri?
anything that keeps me from getting clipped by an SUV is a welcome addition to my bike.

I still have my reflectors too. They add character to the road bike. If I remove them I may gain 1 second on my time....NOT!

When I got my bike it had a rack on the back and I bought a bag for it - so handy! I also had chunky tires. All gone now but reflectors are quite useful. Definitely go with the tassels and the rest of that stuff. Too funny.

Damn bikers...nothing but conformist, hell fire why listen to them...they wear lycra with padding in the front! What's up with that?? Silly boys.

I'm for the tassles and the card in the spokes that makes the clacky noise. It brings back memories. Did you ever a bike with a banana seat? Oh, and the basket on the front. Hee Hee, Ha Ha
Posted by: Juls | September 27, 2006 09:36 AM
don't forget about getting the wicker basket in the front!

I want the cool pretend laser gun I had on my first bike.
and a bag for my super hero action figures.

I dunno -- I like my reflectors. Anything that lessens the chance of me getting hit by one of the crappy drivers around here is good in my book!

Wha !?! Reflecters and kickstands aren't cool? Hmm, better take the stickers off too I guess. :D

I read your blog all the time...but don't always post a comment. This time I had to! I literally laughed...out...loud! Made me think about my bike.... which has reflecters.... and a bell! Ha!

OMG! Do you know that I JUST got my reflectors off in JUNE???!!!
I am the biggest bike loser. My cycling friends are embarrassed to be seen with me.

I'd rather have my reflectors on so that the driver who t-bones me can have a better target to shoot for :)
