I was going to answer your question until I saw your previous post.

Now, you'll just have to wait for someone more mature to answer.

As I have no investment in football ...

The fist swimming drill is primarily a positioning drill, to heighten the hand position and work on the catch phase of the stroke. It also allows you to understand and feel how much the forearm is involved in the stroke. Some people also do it holding tennis balls in each hand!

Stick with it, AJ!!!

pffffffftttttttt

i'm with Tea!

It is to teach you to keep a high, bent elbow during the "catch" phase of your stroke so you can catch lots of water with your forearms and push it backwards instead of windmilling with straight arms and pushing water down toward the bottom of the pool.

A nice theory, not that I have any proficiency at any of that.

Yes, what Wendy said!

Although you may have some other priorities with your stroke just now....

Wendy and Greyhound are on it. This drill has really helped my stroke. It is much more efficient and I have less shoulder pain. There is a big long physics explanation that was given to me...but all in all, it works.

I was reading your post much too quickly and for the life of me, could not understand why someone would want to go fist fishing! I'm thinking, man , this must be a new way to weight train or something...kinda like running in water...ok, now that I've settled down and had my coffee, I can see clearly....crawling back in bed and starting over in 5 min...

I randomly came across this website/ journal. I think its really well done :)

have a great day!

it's definitely meant to improve your catch, and even if you're not feelin' it, don't skip it, as you're only going to create bad habits which will be difficult to correct. a coach once explained it to me that the curve of your arm should feel like you're wrapping it around a barrel. so it's not just about holding fists but more the arch and shape of your arm on entry and then through the catch to maximize the amount of water you can pull through. along with the fist drill just keep the mantra "shoulder above elbow, elbow above wrist." hopes that helps....

i think you've got the right idea.
