Considering Options for Action...

"Communications will lack clarity for much of the day, and that could be profoundly frustrating for you. It's better to spend your time considering options for action rather than actually acting." My horoscope for the day; it made me laugh.

Considering options for action, rather than actually acting?! Do you know who you are talking to?

Okay, so I did have a few posts a week or so ago where I considered my options and intentions prior to acting. But then I realized I was injured, and now I have to consider my options all over again! Do you know how frustrating that is?!

Also frustrating: our apartment complex sold off the back lot, which was our access to the river path. Johnny went out for a run on Saturday morning. When he came back home two hours later, the entire thing was cordoned off with "NO TRESSPASSING" signs everywhere. ARGH! We moved to this location precisely for the easy access to the river path! Okay, so now maybe people's bikes and other sundry items will be safer, since the vagrants who litter the path will no longer have access to our homes, but still.

And I'm getting sick. Yuck.

Okay, I think I'm done throwing my hissy fit.

Nope, not done.

What in the world am I supposed to do while I heal? Obviously, don't run hills. Okay, I will not run hills. But what can I do? Well, I can run up to three, flat miles. So I just keep doing that? For how long? I'm going to lose all the fitness I gained training for my ultramarathon!!! I can't do that! I can't! I like my toned body! I like being able to run longer distances. Now I won't be able to! I've been doing yoga, but me being me, I have to push things, so I end up pushing myself in yoga, making my hamstrings tight, which defeats the purpose. Tight hamstrings = pain in my knee.

I'm going to stomp away in disgust now. Maybe later I can consider my options for acting. All I want to do right now is throw a fit. Yeah, like that's productive. *sigh*

oh no, you better act quickly on that cold cuz it's not fun having it! I'm serious, find anything you can to fight it off.Sorry to hear about your trail access. I'm sure a just a little running won't hurt. I'm thinking of getting a 2nd opinion cuz it still hurts like a bugger.

I so know what you mean! my previously easy 10 mile runs aren't as easy as a few months ago-but, they are still easier than before I started ultra training! Your body is strong, and you won't lose your fitness. Can you do the elliptical or stationary bike on a high level keep up your endurance- or does that hurt too? Just an idea- the elliptical really helped me stay active when I had my injury last year...

You have access to the gym? Spin classes are really good if you have a right teacher and put your mind into pushing, but no impact.

Though never my first choice, cross training is the only answer! Hang in there, you'll be back.

Is the pool an option for you?I am the world's lousiest swimmer, but when it's that or nothing... well... you know...Hang in there.

Don't stress too much about losing your ultrarunning fitness. You will lose speed quickly with time off, but you won't lose endurance. That stays with you much longer. The good news for you is that you CAN run 3 miles without hurting, right? So focus on weekly quality workouts (tempo, track, etc) and fill the rest of the week with some xtraining. Just don't do anything stupid and you might find this forced break in training is a blessing in disguise.

As backOfPack already said, if you're injured and want to keep your fitness, cross training is your only option. Cycling or swimming are probably your best bets.

What is it with all these knee problems in blogger land? Give yourself some rest and heal up quickly.

Sorry to hear about your injury. I am a runner too and just got into trail running. I am up to 10 and 11 mile trail runs and will run a trail half marathon in May. I would love to eventually do ultra events...how long did it take you to get up to ultra-running?

Injuries suck. Hopefully a few days off, some ice and ibu will help it at least be manageable. I've chosen to just ignore my stupid foot. If it falls off I'll hop one one leg,
