My dream race...

Well, I didn't take a walk this weekend, but I think I'll be ready to take a run this upcoming weekend...

I did some research, and found a few races that I am intrigued by:
Moab's Alpine to Slickrock 50 miler
Grand Teton Races
Mt. Hood PCT 50 miler

I also really enjoyed the photos I've seen of the Tahoe Rim Trail races.

I've decided I don't ever want to do Badwater. That much pavement, in that heat, for that long...no way. I admire those who can, and enjoy watching the progress, but me do it? Never! (Now, that doesn't mean I won't crew Rob or Johnny when they do it...)

As far as the "big" 100 mile races go, I don't know that I'd want to do any of them...(sacrilige, I know!) Unless of course, I'm going for the Grand Slam. That'd be pretty cool.

Of course, the first step to all of this is to finish recovering from surgery :) It's good to dream!

Update: I forgot to add that my fear of gaining 20 lbs while recovering? Non-existant. I've lost weight. I'm sure it's all muscle I've lost, but seeing the scale in the 120s for the first time in 11 years was pretty amazing.

Lost weight? Good deal! I gained three pounds after surgery that I have finally just lost again.

Badwater is totally nuts. Totally - way too intense! But I'm already signed on as crew for Rob!

that's one heavy galbladder! heh

Awesome about your weight and good call on Badwater - I can't even imagine doing something like that!

Angie,

I would not be surprised if I saw your name on the Badwater roster a few years from now! Who knows? You have enough spunk and determination to be able to take it on.

Never say never. Right now I swear off BW, but it was my dream race when I marathoned, and who knows...it IS the toughest endurance event, and I like testing...and knowing I suck on asphalt, in the heat makes me wonder...I may crew one gal next year for starters.
Great on the scale front! And I liked your picks, though Teton races (as you know, I basically did the whole course recently in pieces, and Lisa is my good friend/former coach) may not be on my list. That "hill" done 4 times is brutal! The views are magestic :) And I am on for Tahoe Rim races!!!

Badwater always causes the "I will never run Badwater" declarations. Which means you will.

And nice job on the skinniness. Don't assume it's muscle.

Yeah, I sense the itch you have for Badwater. I think you'd love to take it on Angie...as crazy as it sounds.

Oooh, I love your race choices...looks like you are a mountain girl like me! I love running in the mountains as opposed to on pavement and even near the beach. I am a mountain mama at heart.

congrats on getting back into the 120s!

The Grand Slam? Wow. That would be something....

Congrats on the weight loss! Sadly I think I'm gaining :(

Wow, a 50 miler?! So tell me, what kind of things do you think about during these ultramarathons??

I'm just curious.

I think I'd run out of things to think about...for the most part when I'm doing the long runs I usually zone out. :(

Glad to hear your weight loss continues. Just don't get too thin, OK? I've always wanted to see if I'm capable of doing the Massanutten 100 in Virginia, where I'm from. I just don't see me doing it for a long, long time, which coincidentally is what it would take me -- a long, long time. :-)

Thanks for mention of the Tahoe Rim Races...I checked the link out ....
"A glimpses of heaven and a taste of hell"...I'm not an ultra runner (yet) but I think most endurance athletes can relate to those words

Angie,
I have run both Moab 50 miler and the MT. Hood 50 miler. They are two completly different races!

PCT is a "fast" 50 miler. Not too much elevation gain, 5300 ft of gain. While Moab has about 10,000 ft of gain! Both races you do all the climbing the first half. But the climbing is nothing close to the same. You can run almost all of the first 25 miles of PCT while the first 26 miles of MOAB is a ton of hiking. Plus, at MOAB you are above 8000 feet for most all of the race.

PCT is done on 99% single track while a fair percentage of MOAB is done on jeep roads.

I ran MOAB the first year and got lost for 45 minutes with seven others because of limited course markings. It has improved greatly since then. Getting lost at PCT is almost imposible at PCT.

Both can be hot late in the race.

Both are great vacation places. I should have spent more time in MOAB. The rock formations are just amazing!!!

I will be doing PCT this weekend as a training run. "Slow" is the word for the day as Waldo in three weeks is the race of choice. 12,000 feet of gain for a 100k. Just a great race!!! My race of choice all year long.

Good luck on recovery!!! Be patient, it will take a little time. But you will bounce back and be running like a gazelle soon.

Don't feel bad about not knowing about 100 miles. I haven't even decided yet if I want to do a 50 miler! If I do, PCT 50M may be my first. However not this weekend (just the 50K for me). But maybe next year.

oooohhhh! I'll be in the Tetons during that ultra trail running camp! Maybe some of it will wear off on me! Cool race links - they're fun to check out.

Once you've done a few 50 milers, I bet you will sign up for a 100 miler.

And once you have doen a few of those, BW might be calling .... ok, getting ahead now.

Great job on the weight loss. As far as the 100 miles or BW goes - well, I once heard someone say "If you crew it, you'll do it!"

I lost 4 pounds after the surgery (Down to 116!). I think the almost 72 hours pre-surgery without food or water probably affected that. :-) Since I've been back to regular eating I put 1 or 2 of those back on. So I'm guessing the gallbladder weighed about 2 pounds.

I like Jeff's comment (about the heavy gall bladder) Congrat's on the weight loss. I'm sure it wasn't all muscle, and the muscle will come back.

If you have the bug, you might want to be careful about saying "never"! Because you NEVER know! :-) I've read several reports and seen pics of MAS and plan on doing it one day. Maybe next year.

I echo the others' thoughts: Never say never!

And I am not convinced that you have lost all muscle! Why don't you have your lean body mass tested at a local gym? I did that back in May and I was pleasantly surprised! My guess is... you would be too! ;-)

Badwater! Did someone say Badwater!

That is a task that is well beyond my reach at the moment, but one of these years I would love to do it. I'll put you down on my potential crew list and you can keep me in mind for you or Johnny as well.

good to hear that your recovery is going so well! Nothing like setting ultra goals to speed the process.
