Getting Back
Getting back into my routine. Feels good. Went for a run with Paki this morning, our first together since "my last run with my gallbladder." How awesome. It was pretty muggy out this morning, so afterwards I decided an iced mocha sounded really good. I stopped by our old Starbucks, and while I was there I figured I'd get my boys some goodies too. Ash woke up early with me this morning, so I knew Johnny would be tired and extra appreciative of some deluxe coffee. And Ash adores the fruit-slice cookies (sugar cookies with icing to look like oranges or limes) and his "cow's milk" (Horizon Vanilla Milk), so I got him his standard. I was proud of the fact that I ordered a tall iced non-fat mocha, instead of a grande or venti like I (sort of) wanted. I'm trying hard for this moderation thing. Last night for dinner, there was no moderation, and I really want to get there. I'm also working on teaching myself that even though I don't feel physical pain or see the number on the scale rise when I eat high-fat foods, they are still unhealthy and harmful to my body. I remind myself of hardened arteries, heart disease, etc. So each time I eat more than I should (another Taco Bell taco anyone?), I'm trying to remind myself of why I don't want to.
I'm ready to start doing a long run each weekend. I'll be heading out with Kiera on Saturday, and hopefully I'll be able to hook up with JD on Sunday morning. Even though I had to walk a portion of this morning's run (due to a side stitch and the horrid humidity), I still feel ready to run longer distances. My body is ready.
Tonight, I'm meeting Joyce at the gym to go over my strength training plan! Yay! I'm so excited.
Further notes on research into the course of study I'd like to take: it's looking like I'd rather get a degree in Exercise Science (or Exercise Physiology or Kinesiology, depending on which school you look at) with an emphasis in Nutrition. It's also looking like if I really want to pull the two together, I'll need to get my master's degree. I'm very excited about researching this information. But because I did not attend college, I have to start at the very beginning. I'm looking into our community college's options for getting the first two years done. They have a great alternative program where I could attend school once a week, year-round, in the evening and get my associates degree. I like that idea. I just have to figure out when to start. January? But then I'll be in my monster month. That might be hard to start. But better than now, when Johnny's starting student teaching and I have a number of public meetings to attend in the evenings (the same evenings the school's program meets) for work. I really don't want to have to wait very much longer. I have so many years of school ahead of me, I'd like to start asap!
PS thanks Gary for your suggestion to check out SCAN's Web site. I'm still not done exploring their awesome Web site!

Great thoughts. I'm betting that with your whole eating plan - you'll remember how much better good food (whole food, real food, healthy food) will make you feel. It's great to be luxurious and have that taco once in a while - good for the soul, but if you've been eating healthy, you'll notice the taco almost like poison affecting your body. Same thing with a big cheesy pasta, milkshakes, etc.
I'm excited for your school choices (I'm biased because I have a degree in exercise science.) Nutrition will be a great complement to that and something you'll be fascinated by and passionate about.

Angie,
It's great that you got out with Paki this morning! Yay! I thought of you the other night. I ran 10 miles in the morning, then went to the movies with Eric and Riley - we were good, no snacks. Then we stopped at a local burger place for dinner. The kind where you can't find a healthy thing on the menu...and I had a loaded up veggie burger (in my defense, I asked for no mayo, but they put it on anyway, and I didn't complain!) and a huge order of fries. It was sooooo good! I hardly ever do that. But once in a while...Anyway, it made me think of you doing the same thing!
On the school side of things - that is so awesome! It might be kind of nice to start at the community college level. It'll give you a chance to ease back into it, and to figure out how to make it work with your life. By the time you are done there, you'll be ready for the more intense programs. Cool!

It's so nice to hear that you are getting out there and getting some mileage in. Yum - iced mocha...I actually went into a coffee shop yesterday with someone (took a walk break from work) and had no intention of getting anything. One of the ladies that works there came over to me w/an iced mocha and said she made one too many and asked if I wanted it...free iced mocha or me! That never happens!

Way to go on the positive mental attitude! That is great, and I second the notion that you will feel so much better with the healthy whole foods in your body than manufactured foods.
Run on girl! I am right with you - strength training, and starting a longer run this weekend! I will virtually be running with you!

angie, you're welcome for the suggestion. as Nikki and I both went the exercise phys / kines direction in school I have lots of opinions. Especially because my goal was always to go sports nutrition, grad school just didn't happen that way :)
Working at a university now, I also have a lot of opinions when students come to me and ask about the career path in these areas. I don't want to flood you with my nonsense, but feel free to email me if you have questions.
For exercise phys, you should check out: acsm. Most programs are influenced by this organization.

way to go on the run - and keep it up with the food plan. I still stick with my food journal - I allow myself to cheat on the weekends, but I'm right back in it during the week. It's just so nice that it doesn't hurt when I cheat.

I'm excited for you for all your educational and career goals! That's my fantasy career too. But since I'm too old and set in my ways now, I'll have live vicariously through you!

congrats on your decision to go back to school. Community college is a great option for your first couple of years. Even if you just take your English, Math and Humanities courses through them, it will save you so much money.
Good luck on your long run this weekend.

Hello Angie! Nice to find a fellow Tucsonan...I stumbled across your blog recently and have been meaning to de-lurk and say hello. Your posts have been a true inspiration to me and I thank you! Although...I will tell you that I have been thinking about iced mochas all the live-long day today and I blame you! :-) I'm pretty sure I know what I'm ordering on my morning Starbucks run tomorrow.

Yay for you! I'm so glad you are getting back int o a routine with your running - and practicing moderation in eating. What fun to study all that possible college stuff :) Oh and kinda random but someone came in to Nike tonight to buy shoes and they were visiting from Tuscon!

good to hear you are getting back on your feet! also, following a healthy diet makes all difference. I recently had so many problems digesting more fatty foods, that I "love" to eat healthy now...and it's easy, because you KNOW what it's for..it's all for a better RUNNING. YAY!!!!!

January? Sounds perfect, as everything always hits at once! I've often wished I could find a way to go back to school for either a exercise and sports science degree also, though since I can barely find time to read the funnies at home I don't think I'll ever manage it. Looks like I'll be at the party, but I'll be late since I work until 5. Looking forward to it though.

Love the idea of making choices and getting grip on life. The important thing for me is to stay as excited as when I first make a decision - hold on to it tight, talk about it, make small steps. You know, I am going through choices and steps myself, and I only say it because I love you deeply. I found I do loose a thread rather quickly - personally, I need motivational tools, or enrollement in to something...not sure. And - I LOVE the career path you're planning!!

What a speedy recovery! Glad you are doing better. I think you'll do great in school, an emphasis in nutrition would be VERY helpful and interesting, at least to me!

mmm taco bell. Girl you made me hungry! I struggle with eating too much (or any) of bad things too. I will have to try your method of telling myself why I don't want those things.

I think the best time to start school is always now. If you wait for the perfect time it may never happen. However, I understand the need to wait for Johnny's student teaching to be done with. Glad to hear you are getting back into running slowly but surely.

Angie, Exercise Science/Nutrition was one of my previous college degree. Awesome! A community college would be an awesome idea.
Nice run!

I spent 7 years going to night school to get my bachelors and masters degees, it takes a lot of dedication, you really have to have a hunger for it - kind of light training for a long ultra! You can do it!!
Sounds like your running is slowly getting up to speed, but remember slowly but surely.

I'm glad to hear that you are running and feeling good!
Along with Gary, please feel free to email me if you have any questions about school/questions. (BA in Kinesiology Exercise Science, and MS Exercise Physiology). I might be able to share some helpful experiences with you!

As someone who just downed a fish taco (locals' favorite) with glee, a little fat isn't going to hurt you -- not like it used to anyway. But it's probably good you'll be burning more calories on the weekends. Glad to see you're in full form again.
