Training, woo hoo!
I'm back! And I'm training!
I'm sore from the gym on Sunday, and made it out this morning to run with Paki, even though it looked like it was raining. (5:15 phone call. me, racing to the phone: hello? paki: it's raining. me: oh, yeah. the ground is wet outside. paki: it's raining. me: yeah, it looks like it is. you still running? paki: i don't know. it'll be muddy. me: well, i'm going to run. paki: well, if i'm there, i'm there. otherwise, go without me. Paki did show up - turns out it wasn't muddy or raining. But it did get muggy on the way out.)
I'll be heading back to the gym tonight, followed by running Thurs morning. Friday morning = gym again, then Saturday I'll do Sabino with Kiera. Hopefully Sunday I'll get out with JD up on Mt. Lemmon, but I'm awaiting Johnny's thoughts on that matter...
So, awhile back, I was sent some Accelerade to sample and review. One gel burst open during shipment, so the envelope it was sent it smelled disgusting, and it was a mess!

After washing everything off, I put it away in the cupboard, and it's been sitting all alone in my kitchen while I've been recovering.

Finally, last week, I took it out on a run. I want to save some for a long run - a real test - but I needed to at least try a little bit. Accelerade uses protein in it's mix, in addition to my favorite, electrolytes. I'm intrigued to see if the protein makes any difference on a long run. For the short run, I didn't find any real difference in performance (hello, it's only a short run!), however, I loved the taste. It's a lemon flavor, but the protein adds a creamy texture, mmm. Johnny had been looking longingly at it for the few weeks the canister just sat there, and so I let him have a go at it as well. He and I agree - it tastes too good to be a sports drink! But for me, taste is not nearly as important as performance. My preferred methoed of fueling has been crank e-gels and water (supplemented with clif zbars or other random foods available) - a fantastic way to fuel during long runs and races. It would take a lot to get me off that habit. E-gels are the cheapest gels per oz, and I enjoy the taste. Like I said, I'm very interested in seeing if Accelerade will meet the same electrolyte and caloric needs so wonderfully met by my current system. It's always good to have variety!
Comments
I've been seeing a lot of people comment positively on Accelerade. Either a lot of folks have gotten free samples or the product's catching on, maybe because of the taste.

Taste is important - I'll wait to see what you think of it after you've used it during a long run to determine whether I am going to give it a shot. Again, it is so nice to see you posting about training.

I'm glad the drink was good but creamy lemon does NOT sound appealing. :-) Please tell me it was more like lemonade?
No rain here either.

Funny about the supposed rain. Of course that would never stop us here in the PNW! ; ) : )

Okay, not to be gross, but it has to be asked. Did you have any (ahem) "tummy troubles" with the Accelerade?? Gatorade kills me, so I would love to find something new.

Angie, it's great that you are out running again! That is so exciting. We haven't tried any Accelerade yet, I'll be anxious to see what you think. My watered down zipfizz and sharkies worked great for me during the half.

Yay for being back at training. I've used Accelerade for quite awhile....actually, the taste is yucky to me! I'm happier with a banana.

Great that you are back to training! I'm curious how the Accelerade is going to work for you. I've also had stomach issues with Gatorade (as did JK) - so I'm looking for a replacement.

Hurray for being back out there!! That's great!!

Good for you, Angie!

I am so glad you are out there training again! Definitely post the Accelerade review. I can't for the life of me fuel appropriately and I often pay for it big time.

When I lived in the great white north (Madison, Wisconsin), I used to run at 5:30 a.m. with my neighbor year-round. In the winters, when she would give me my 5:15 wake-up call, we always had the same conversation. I would croak out a "what's it like outside?" and she would answer, "dark and cold". And then we'd meet and go for our run. Your story reminded me of that. Thanks!

Being back is good...no, it's wonderful!
May be I should try this new A stuff, as soon as I finish the old one, but then again, since I am not going long, when will this happen? :)

Go Angie, get running!
I'm a fan of water, m'self.

We had fun at the party, thanks again. I was on the bluff trail the other day, but I'm hoping to get back to the Champions Loop soon! See you Saturday. I have some car-BOOM for you if you or your ultra-buddies use it. It's just too sweet for me.

Yep, I have heard a lot of good reviews on Accelerade as well. I'll have to pick some up and give it a try. Good luck with the running this week.

So glad you are running too :)
And funny - I had the EXACT same gel explosion problem and mess :)
and I'm also curious to see how the stuff will work on long runs!

Your friends call you at 5:00 AM to tell you they THINK it's raining? What do the people that don't like you do? Call you at 4?
Let us know how the Accelerade works out on a long run. I'm still using Hammer Gel (old habit).

you seem to be back on track again which is great! I emailed that guy about getting samples of that stuff but never got a reply. I guess he ran out. I may try it though, sounds good! (especially since it seems I need to do a better job of refueling on my long runs)

How did you score a sample of that stuff?

Great info on the accelerade - I had no idea it had protein.

Congrats on getting back to the training, Angie. I haven't tried Accelerade since I generally prefer to get my calories from gels and solid food. I prefer NUUN and plain water for most runs, but am always willing to try somthing new. I tried E-gels, but found it too sweet. I stick with Gu or Clif Shots.

Shee's Baaaa--aaaackkk!
Accelerade, eh? I'll have to see if I can find that up North here. I'm pretty much a protein addict. :-)

CHEERS....Glad to see your back & finding your groove!! Thanks for the detailed info...I may buy some Accelerade and give it a go!
Keep on keeping on!

Very smart to start mixing up the gels and what not. I ought to start doing that as well.

I need to try the accelerade. I prefer GU in the plain or vanilla flavors, or Clif Gels in Raspberry and strawberry. I ADORE the Clif strawberry gels - very much like strawberry jam. Yummy!
I too have issues with proper hydration and fueling during the longer runs. I have been known to pop 1 Gu pack in a half marathon, crossing the finish line with a half-full bottle of water, and 9 of my 10 packed gels. Humpf.... that would explain the muscle cramping and general disdain for the mileage.
