Help!

Okay, I think I've fixed the error that was popping up for y'all. You should now be able to comment. Let me know if not. Thanks!

But first: my experiment

So I was at the pharmacy last night, picking up a prescription, and you know, the hair care aisle is right there. I found myself wandering down, eyeing the hair color. Total impulse buy...

Okay, on to my plea for help:
I’ve been foam rolling, I’ve been stretching, I’ve been using Ibuprofen, I’ve been using the Stick. I’ve rested, I’ve iced, I’ve soaked in a hot bath.

Nothing is working.

If anything, my knee is getting worse.

Granted, a 16.2 mile hike on a sore knee isn’t exactly resting, but I’m still pretty surprised at how much it hurt. I climbed a flight of stairs yesterday (I’m still pretty sore, that was a funny sight!), and when I descended, my knee was hurting. One measly flight of stairs!

Help.

What do I do? If this persists, I won’t be able to run OP50 in March; I won’t be able to train. I won’t be able to run Twin Peaks 50k in February. I won’t be able to lose the 10 or so pounds (and too many inches!) I’ve gained in the last few months. I won’t be able to kick ass anymore. I won’t be a tough ultrarunner.

I’m out of ideas on how to rehabilitate this. I’d like to go to a doctor, but I’d want it to be a doctor who knows running/runners, and won’t just tell me to never run again. How do I find a doctor like that? Anyone in Tucson know of a doctor I could see?

In the meantime, I need to start some serious cross-training. I now have a bike (loaned indefinitely) that I am starting to ride (bike safety class tonight and Saturday, yay!). I have a hard time with the gym – so boring, plus it’s like 20 minutes away, which is a 40 minute round trip – too long! I won’t be able to keep that up. Yoga? In my tiny studio? Maybe I can make that work.

I need advice, ideas, suggestions, help. Please!!!

There is
one sports doc who is a runner that "fast" Dan swears
by, and he's close to you. His last name is Nardone, I
forget his first name. They have his cards over at the
Running Shop so you could call them for the number I'm
sure. I personally didn't have a great experience with
him, but that was because I really just needed a
podiatrist (which he wasn't) for an emergency fix. He
is a runner, and he's run with the Workout Group
before. He would probably be worth a try.

I also think you need to get your butt over to the
shop and let them suggest some shoes. Honestly,
changing to stability shoes fixed the problem for me
(I had it on one leg, then the other, then it switched
back to the first leg). Once I found the right shoes
it just vanished.

Good luck. Nice hair,
Mike

Hello!

First of all, love your blog! :)

Second, I would agree with Mike's comment regarding shoes. Make sure you are fitted properly with the correct ones for you and your running style.

A couple of year ago, I experienced problems similar to the ones your described, and that was when I was buying shoes off the shelf with no guidance. Finally, I went to a a specialty running store and got fitted for shoes (stability shoes were the right ones for me), and this year I ran more than a dozen races, all pain free.

Good luck, and take care of that knee!

Jean

I feel your pain..injuries...docs...trying to cross train...gym is a pain in the butt if you love the outdoors. i'm just telling myself over and oever it will be worth it!

YAY!! I LOVE your hair... did you get it cut too? or was it just styled differently.

sorry for your knee pain, hope you get it fixed soon so you can make all your runs!

You women just can't leave your hair alone can you. It looks good, really it does. (I have to repeat that cause my wife usually does not believe me when I say it looks good. Was I convincing?)

i have a twin!! :o) looks like my color -- nice job, it does look like it was cut too! i like that style

Looks good! Hope you figure out the problem soon. The shoe suggestion seems like a good idea. Keep at it - you'll figure it out.

Awesome hair color! Running with pain is sucky -- I had knee problems for a little while. I think it was all about the shoes I was running in, so I went to a running store and had them work with me to figure out the best support for my frame.

Turn to the biking cross training for a few days as it might help your knee pain reduce. Then hit the road with new shoes and see how it goes.

You look 20 years younger. As for the knee, get drunk every night for a week instead of running. This way, every morning your head will hurt more that the knee.

First, don't panic (yet!). I'm not sure how long this has been going on but it seems too early to worry. Second, I'd try Bodycentral PT. I think they work with a lot of athletes. You might need to see your regular dr first and get a referral...depends on your insurance.

Love the hair, Angie!

I've been battling my ITB for a bit now and it's on the mend. I've steered clear of hot baths, since some of it's caused by inflammation. Lots of walking has helped stretch the band and yoga has really aided in the recovery. I found a daily VodCast from Yoga Today that I do a few times a week.
Otherwise, the Stick, the stretching, the Aleve, icing, all that stuff has taken the sting out. This is the first week I've gotten my mileage back to anywhere near where it was. And shockingly, it's the first week my weight is back down to normal!

Feel better, and take care of it!

Listen to Mike, he gave best advice, and it's local.
I already said about the hair, but just once more - drop dead gorgeous!

The hair is awesome! What a fun impulse - I did purple streaks a while back. Make sure you find a running doc - you'll get way faster results. And yoga in a tiny studio? Definitely. All you need is the space to roll out a mat in front of the tv with a video - piece of cake!

RED!! Very nice! As for the knee, I'll let you know as soon as I get mine figured out. As I have mentioned on my blog, I've had to drop to the half at PF Chang's because of it and I'm going to be lucky to pull that off. I have one of those pull-on neoprine knee braces. It does take the pressure off of the knee (my injury was a compression fracture of the kneecap in highschool baseball, so it's probably a little different), but the chaffing kind of sucks. If you get any useful advice, I would love it if you pass it along. PLEASE!!!!!

You look great. I guess you were inspired all of the fellow redhead runners. :D We are young...and fast!!

don't panic, angie. you will still be able to train and run ultras. you ARE a tough runner already, by the way. BUT you need to get to a doctor ASAP. it seems you got some suggestions above... i was able to call my insurance and find a doctor that was both a general practitioner and a sports medicine doctor. he then referred me to a physical therapist to "fix" my chondromalacia. i was able to run a marathon in 6 weeks. the sooner you go, the higher your chances to heal quicker. good luck!

Hey that hike down the mountain probably took a good toll on the knee! Make sure you stretch those quads! I would def reccommend ART therapy if you can find a doc that does that out there!

Love the hair!

First off - love the hair. Second - I used to have major issues with ITB. The best recommendation is to REST. No cross training, no nothing. At least for a couple of days straight. Make sure to stretch and ice plenty and that should help. For awhile, I also wore a brace over the top of my knee on my thigh. This helped as well.

Awesome BLOG Angie and hair looks great...

I am a newbie runner/blogger training for my FIRST Marathon and was told by several people to go to a running store and get checked out for what's the best shoe for me...

I feel ok now a little knee pain in my left knee...I can tell already that my shoes could fit me better...so I am going this Monday to the running store, see what they recommend.

Best wishes about ur knee,

Bob

Great hair! You look fabulous. : )

Hope the knee is better. I would definitely get it checked out by a pro...either a doctor or a PT. And sports massage can do wonders too. Good luck!

Great hair and nice to see a few updated photos of you Angie. Hot hot hot!!!

I hope your knee improves and you get the help and satisfaction you're looking for. I haven't a clue...other than keep doing what you were doing. It's sounds like it should work.

Love the hair!!

Nice color! :)

I would say look for a doctor that is also related to athletic training/athletic physical therapy - your insurance company should have something to tell them that. You can also call the local high school & jr. college coaches and ask for reccomendataions. UofA will have it's own doctors on staff as most PAC-10 schools do - and with UofA and their medical school - absolutely. Continue RICE (elevation means above your heart, not just a few feet off the ground, so if you are resting in a chair, stick the leg up higher. :)

Good luck & keep us posted!

OK - now I have one back at you - I heard you had gall bladder surgery. I have mine on Tuesday and am starting to get really nervous (read junk on the internet and my husband is not pro-surgery). Had stones for years and insurance is changing to make it cost a lot instead of being free - so doing now. Have you had to make a lot of changes since? Did you have a long recovery? My Mom didn't - but some internet postings have me scared. Thanks in advance. :)

Love the hair color. It really works for you. I'd go with Mike's suggestion.

I like Mike's suggestions. Another thing, why not avoid hills, stairs etc for a while. Perhaps some treadmill running (flat and soft) is necessary for a while. That way you can avoid aggravating the issue while still getting in your runs and not lose any fitness. Just a thought. I love the color - looks great on you.

Hi there Angie!

Love the hair! I'm actually dying my blonde hair red this comming weekend! We can be twinsies...whoohoo!

The Knee - The cure all depends on the location and what it is exactly, of course. I've seen that a local Tucson runner has suggested a runner-friendly doc that is close to you. That's good and the first step to recovery. Email to me your symptoms if you have time and I can probably give you a guesstimate (through experience and my education) of what you're dealing with.

Don't worry...knees can be fixed! :)

The pharmaceutical industry at present receives superprofits from sales and consequently should put in improvement of quality of training of experts WBR LeoP
