Cold Weather Ahead

The Big Tree

Last night myself and peg-leg went for yet another run, but this time we weren't as lucky as to run in dry weather. We were rained upon by the clouds in the sky, making me feel extremely cold and vulnerable. I can't get used to the rain this year. It has already rained more than twice the average rainfall for June and we have another day left (after today)! The weather forecast doesn't look too good either. I suspect that I am going to be one wet feeshy by the end of my bike ride tomorrow.

Hope everyone has a fabulour weekend!

A Dry Moment

Double Seeing Emergency

Tonight there was no rain. What makes this unusual is that it is the first evening in more than a week that the rain is not literally pouring down while I attempt doing some form of exercise.

Myself and Peg-Leg (direct all questions as to how my husband got this name to Jeff) went for a 40 minute run in the beautiful sunshine outside, listening to the birds happily chirping away - I assume they were just as happy as myself to see a few rays of golden sun - and the streams bubbling away, clean as the rain that has been falling.

Elsewhere in the country hundreds of people are still not in their houses because of the floods that have ravaged the country. Keep those folks in your prayers tonight. Its been a rough week and we have more rain forecast for the next few weeks :(

Until that falls though, I'll be happily running with some shorts on and not be bothered :)

Dial My Number

This morning, shortly after husband dearest left at 7AM and went to work, I sat quietly, looking at pictures in my RSS feeder, reading blogs and having tea, when the phone rang and made me sit upright to reach out and pick it up.

On the other side was a very irate woman who had just received a parcel in which - as she put it - Everything was broken. I'm still not sure what that has to do with me, but after ten minutes of listening to her explain that service of this standard is unacceptable, I finally told her she had the wrong number and put the phone down. A few seconds later the phone rang again - same woman, same story, except she only got into 4 sentences before I very politely once again told her that she was not speaking to the right people. She phoned back again - this time she asked who she was speaking to and then asked me if I knew who she could contact. Somewhere in her mind, it didn't register that she wasn't even phoning the right company. I explained to her that she had landed at a residential home; she apologized profusely and put the phone down. It didn't take a genius to figure out that it was going to be her on the other side of the phone when it rang again 20 seconds later.

That was the start of my week. I had to smile quietly, while at the same time feeling a tad irritated myself at having to deal with someone with problems that early in the morning. I didn't let it upset me though and finished my tea in my laid back position.

At 8:50 - just as I was leaving the house - the phone rang again. Same woman, same problem, but this time I just didn't have the time or will to deal with her again. I put the phone down and left for work. I'm sure that steamed her even more, but at that stage, it just wasn't my problem anymore, if it ever was.

At lunchtime, I dropped home to have a lovely bowl of noodles and found that there was 39 missed calls on our house phone. I dialed the number for the messaging service and sure enough, the same woman had left me 39 messages, some of them with a very high pitch, others just very loud. She accused me of avoiding her calls (that took a genius to figure out), bad customer service, going to the police and various other things.

I felt a tad bad for her, so I took my mobile, masked the number and phoned her. I informed her that she was harassing me, considering that I had already explained to her that the number she was dialling, was a residential address. She pretended to not know anything about it, at which point I told her that if she phoned our number again, she would find that I was the one answering.

I put the mobile down and sure enough, the phone rang. I picked up and this time I could hear the embarrassment in the voice on the other rend of the line. She apologized and I asked for the company name and number on the invoice - at which point I could not hide my laughter. She had transposed some digits but, I figure, instead of checking the number again against the one she was phoning, kept hitting, hit redial, ultimately ending up at our house.

I still feel bad for her, but now only because she proved herself to be a tad idiotic.

Oops, I went to bed too late

I went to bed too late last night and I'm paying for it this morning. Throw in the fact that I did a cycling session last night didn't exactly help with the sleepiness symptoms this morning either.  I woke up at 7h20 and felt like I could sleep another few hours.  I need to get to bed before 22h00 tonight, otherwise I might not be able to get up tomorrow morning.

The cycling session last night was really hard to complete - after weeks out of the game, I managed to finish the hour, but only after that I realised that I had forgotten that my cycling heartrate zones are lower than my running heartrate zones.  I ended up staying in zone 2 for a fair bit longer than I should've.  I'm not happy with that, but then again, I don't think I could've finished it within an hour in zone 1.  I had a lot of music to help me through, but my heart just didn't want to stay down.  At some stage it was over 170 for a few seconds.  I really hope it gets better soon - I'd love to be able to cycle and run easily again.

Light at the End

Light at the End

I can train again! I did my first training session in 6 weeks last night on the bike and boy, was it painful. My legs turned into a mass of jelly, and my lungs ached as I huffed and puffed like the big bad wolf. Was it not for a long stretching session afterwards, I know I'd be feeling quite sore today.

I did 60 minutes on the bike and I suspect it was only the fact that I was on the bike that kept me going. I felt so happy that I could train again, but as stated before, it was painful. Its the first step of many to the light at the end of the road.

A South African transplant enjoying the rain, rain and more rain in England's middle country.
