A 55K Bike Ride

This afternoon my wife wanted to study, so I decided to take a little bike ride. Fifty-five kilometers later (34 miles) I returned home and right away received “the look” from my wife. Our conversation went something like this:

Her: I thought you were going for a bike ride?
Me: I did!
Her: A bike ride is like 30 minutes, not 2½ hours!
Me: It was nice weather so I went a little further today.
Her: Why didn’t you have your cell phone with you, I tried to call?
Me: Oh, I guess I forgot it…
Her: And you didn’t have your ID with you either…
Me: No I forgot that too.
Her: When you get hurt how is anyone supposed to know who you are?
Me: You’re right (trying to escape).

Of course she didn’t let me get off that easy, I had to listen to the lecture about having my ID with me, why do I have a cell phone, how she is supposed to find me (especially as far as I go), etc.

In my own defense, I typically do carry my wallet and cell phone, this time these things were the last things on my mind. On my long runs I always have both with me because I run places where no one would find my corpse any time soon.

Do you guy’s ever think about this? I mean letting someone know where you are running or cycling? I think it’s a good idea, but am still bad about letting my wife know.

Always!! I have to leave my route and time expected back. It's kind of a pain, because I'm always wishing I could deviate from "the plan". It's a bit harder when I am out in the woods alone. I do have the RoadID tags for my shoes.

i am really bad at it, too...especially when we are venturing off into trails or long bike rides. it's hard to remember that there is someone at home not with you and hoping you are being safe. the flip side of it is that i feel bad about saying..."hey, i am going to be gone on a 6-hour run...see you later"

I always remember all of the above (but I'm a scaredy-cat). I also always pressure Johnny to give me specifics before he leaves. I also always try to make sure he has the phone, since he doesn't always remember or want it.

Hubby is usually at work when I head out for my runs. I do however make sure I have ID & health cards with me. If you like to run/ride light there are shoe and tag type ids you can get.

Like you however, I am bad for saying I'll be back in an hour and ummm being a "tad" longer...lol.

Bad you for making your significant other worry! It's okay to go on an uber-long ride but you have to let others know where you are and bring a cell phone, silly! One time, Jason was out studying late and didn't call and his cell was off. I was calling hospitals when he walked in the door.

I always carry my phone, and one of my pairs of shoes has an id tag, but not the second pair. As far as letting him know where I'll be...we both have many runs we can make from our house - and we seldom specify where we'll be. I guess we'd just have to check everywhere.

Eric's usually gone to work by the time I get back, and I'm usually on the run when he gets back. So it's iffy. On the other hand, there's lots of people up and about so someone would see us.

Niamh is usually asleep when I run, so she doesn't mind - and she wouldn't appreciate it if I woke her to tell her where I'm going at 6 am.

As for your question, Cork is about 2 hours by car from here. It would be a lot faster if the roads were better.

I carry my phone against my body and leave it on vibrate. I, too, have a roadid that goes around my wrist. Now that I'm in a marathon group, I also have an ID on one shoe.

Plus....in Chicago the police ask you to put in an "In Case of Emergency" number on your cell phone--ICE--so I have that plugged in to.

As a woman, I think we are naturally more concerned when we're out alone.

Yeah. I don't always carry mine, but I do on a bike ride, and I try to remember when I run or walk. I ride in some pretty rural spots where I'd have a long walk to ge tto a phone!

Cell phone: most of the times on trails, but only because if something happens to the car (like disappears) - I need to get out of trailhead somehow. Never on roads. ID - never. And no, I don't feel guilty. I don't have extra pockets for one and not making a bunch of them for all the shoes I use. I hope to survive my runs:) Telling my husband - rarely and very vagely. Early mornings he is asleep and never even sure whether I am at the gym or running trails or roads. After work - well, he is still at work. On the weekends I give him general park name (Forest or Gorge), he won't remember the name of trail anyway, and I change my mind as I go often. Besides, it's safe. And if it's not - it means I won't be found for awhile...I am careless.

I get the "How long did you *Think* you were going to be gone?" way too often.

I did get a road ID badge a while back, and usually wear that. A buddy of mine used to do the simple thing - took a piece of paper, wrote his info on it in waterproof ink, laminated it, and laced it into his sneaks. Cheap, effective, didn't forget it.

I almost never think about it, except now. I never carry any kind of identification and my running friends would be much more likely to know where I was then my wife would. And I would have definitely got the look if I said I was going out for a bike ride and came back 2 1/2 hours later, all though that is definitely something that I would do.

I don't bring along my cell phone but I do wear a Road ID on my ankle. I'm not always good about telling my husband where I'll be or when I think I'll be back though. He'd probably forget anyway.

oh yes, i think about this often especially since i live alone. i try to make sure someone knows where i'm going. I don't carry a cell because it is just too heavy. steverunner.com has a very sobering podcast about the one time he left everything home by mistake and suffered HEAT stroke and barely made it back alive! It's hard to be too careful.
