Forgettable Week
Well, it's been a week to forget. Everyone's been sick. I didn't get a swim in. I didn't get a bike in. I ran yesterday, got a stitch in my side, and my legs ached all day.
Not the week I'd hoped for, in training or in life. Oh well, you play the hand you're dealt.
I'm very much looking forward to tomorrow's triathlon. I'm a bit disappointed that I'm only doing the try-a-tri (basically, a half-sprint), but at the same time I'm sure it's the right decision. From what I'm hearing, the water temperature is fine, so my fears were unfounded. I'm totally positive that I could do a 500m swim.
On the other hand, even the reduced distance tomorrow will contain a lot of unknowns. First triathlon. First open water swim. First bike race. First transitions.
I was never planning on winning anyways (that requires natural athleticism), but really, tomorrow will be a huge success solely by virtue of the learning experience. If I do try the sprint triathlon in mid-July, I'll already have my feet wet, so to speak.
My main thought today seems to lie with the swim. I had originally wanted to try to go for it on the swim, to benchmark myself against other fledgling triathletes in the water. I'm not fast in the water, but if I work at it I'm not slow, either. Everything I'm reading, though, says that coming out of the water with a reasonable heart rate is the key to the event. So, no freestyle sprinting for me.
My prediction? 30-50th percentile on the swim, 60th-90th percentile on the bike, and 40th-50th percentile on the run.

Best of luck to you today, Warren! You are going to be amazing and you KNOW you're going to have, what jank would call, 'a bug eating grin'. Enjoy the experience and we expect a fantastic race report!
