Running in the rain

I really need to learn to not say things like "it's going to be a great day!" when referring to the weather. By the time I was ready to head out the door, it was raining. At least it was warmer than last time. I almost headed out the door in a sleeveless shirt, but changed my mind at the last minute and decided on a short sleeve shirt. You wouldn't think a few inches would make a difference but I was glad I went with the shirt instead.

I forced myself to run slow this morning, and I was fairly successful. I think the rain and clouds caused the Garmin to measure mile 3 a little long though (I ran through Big Blue again, and my watch didn't beep for 3 miles until I was past the spot I'd determined to be 3 miles on Thursday). I had intended on running an out and back, but got distracted by a new bike path. I think this path is more of a neighborhood path than a city bike path, but it was very pretty with lots of flowers and a little creek. Since I detoured back on the new bike path, I had to add in some distance towards the end.

The rain was kind of intermittent ... it was drizzly for the first 2 miles, then it stopped for a bit. Then it sprinkled, and it turned into more of a light rain by the end. Since it wasn't a downpour, I didn't realize how wet I was until I got back to the house. (Somehow I kicked mud up onto my legs, too). Because it was warmer than last time, I was even able to open the door AND take off my shoes all by myself.

Worst part about the run is that as usual, despite going multiple times before leaving, I needed to pee. The feeling started maybe in the second mile, but I figured that with as much construction as there is around here, surely I'd pass a portapotty. Well apparently I chose a route with no construction and therefore no portapotties! I actually started getting a little crampy towards the end. I think the bathrooms in the Big Blue park might have been open, but by the time I got over there I didn't want to waste the time to stop, especially since home wasn't that far away.

I did take a look at the shorts at Target while grocery shopping today. I didn't try them on, but they looked like they could be a possibility if they went on sale. (Although looking at Target's size chart now, maybe not). I wish they still carried their own brand, instead of everything being made by Champion. The Target brand stuff was pretty cheap.

On a more pleasant shopping note, National Running Center sent me a code for 15%. I went ahead and ordered my next pair of shoes along with the amphipod micropack that Alison has recommended. I thought about adding in a pair of the Moving Comfort shorts that I like. What stopped me is that I bought a pair at the Freescale Expo that fit fine except for the liner which seems to be meant for someone with a much, much larger butt than me. The shorts fit great except for that, but the big droopy butt annoys me enough I rarely wear the shorts. I'm pretty sure that the booth I got them at was NRCs, so to be on the safe side I didn't order any shorts. I don't know if the amphipod will work for my phone (as I said in comments, I think the best solution might be for the Engineer to just buy me a teeny tiny phone), but it looks like it might be better for my car key than my shorts pocket.

Marissa!! Your back. You were gone and I couldn't find you and now your back!! hurrah

great job on keeping the pace down, M. I seriously have to work on that. I get going and I start thinking, "oh, this feels great!" and then all of a sudden i'm going too freaking fast. it's going to be a serious struggle.

Very good pacing in there. That is exactly where you want to be for training for that run you're doing with the goal you are shooting for. That was where I tried really hard to keep it, some got a bt faster!!

I love running in the rain...I had the bathroom problem on my run on Saturday too. Normally I'm OK, but I skipped the option of going before I left and of going halfway through...stupid!! Made me cut the run 6 minutes short...

Hey Brit! Glad you found me again!

Sarah, you and me both. I hate running slower and am a terrible judge of pace, so I hear you on the struggle part.

Danielle, sorry you had to cut your run short. I'm usually good, too, but I think I maybe only went 3 times before leaving instead of my usual 4. Yeah, I like to really make sure I won't have to use the bathroom while running. Thanks for the reassurance about the pace!

Hi Marisa! I am beginning training for a marathon (Philly). I'm looking at a nice pair of shoes from National Running Center but they are expensive. How did you get your coupon code? How could I get one? I have looked online to no avail.

Thanks, and best of luck at Chicago.

I'm on the NRC mailing list (http://www.nationalrunningcenter.com/store/ContactUs.asp) and they send out codes maybe once a month (or more, can't remember). I recommend it if you like their stuff!
